Man convicted for raping a teenager |

Port Blair, Nov 26: The Court of Sessions Judge today convicted a person on being found guilty of the offence of committing rape and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for six years and to pay a fine of Rs.50,000/- and in default of payment to undergo rigorous imprisonment of further four years. He was also awarded another term of rigorous imprisonment for 2 years for commission of offence under section 506 IPC and to pay a fine of Rs.5000/- and in default 6 months rigorous imprisonment. The sentence was passed last Monday stating that the period of imprisonment of six years and 2 years will run concurrently and the period which the accused has already undergone shall set off and an amount of Rs.40000/- out of the total fine, if paid by the accused, shall be paid to the victim as compensation. According to the brief fact, the victim Alka Bara aged 14 years, D/o Lalit Bara went to the field for grazing the cattle along with her aunt on 29-11-2006 after returning from school. The accused, Harman Toppo came from behind and forcibly laid her on the ground and commited rape as her aunt was away at another place with cattle. The incident was reported at the police outpost at Tushnabad and the victim was admited in PHC, Tushnabad and after conducting investigation a chargesheet was filed against the accused for commissioning of offence under section 376 / 323/ 506 IPC on 9-10-2007. After examining as many as 16 witnesses during the trial, the Sessions Judge found Harman Toppo guilty for the offence U/S 376 / 506 IPC and passed the sentence.
