Port Blair, Feb 5: As part of the Milan-2010, a day-long seminar on the topic “Navies in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations” was organized at Dweepika auditorium located at Buniyadabad. The Hon’ble Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen (Retd.) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM inaugurated the seminar by lighting the traditional lamp.
Addressing the gathering, the Lt Governor expressed happiness that seminar on an important topic like ‘Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR)’ is being organized under the auspices of MILAN-2010. He said that the fury of the nature knows no boundaries and is a common challenge for all. It is, therefore, necessary that we must cooperate and coordinate with each other to respond to any form of natural disasters in an effective manner. Underscoring the need for devising reliable early warning mechanism, he said it is imperative to invest in early warning system so that early action can be taken for minimizing the damage and suffering. He also lauded the role played by the media by responsible coverage of natural disasters and hoped that media will continue to speak for the vulnerable.
In his key note address, the Chief of Navy Staff, Admiral N. K. Verma, PVSM, AVSM, ADC said that armed forces are the first responder for any natural calamity. In view of this, it is imperative on our part that we remain prepared to deal with such challenges.
Earlier, the Commander-in-Chief, ANC, Vice Admiral D. K. Joshi welcoming the chief guest and others informed that since starting in the year 1995, seven Milan has been held so far.
Later, session on ‘Naval Operations for HADR Challenges and Solutions for Response Management’ was held in which Navel delegates from India, Singapore, Bangladesh and Indonesia spoke on various related topics.
