Green Cadets of GSSS Subhashgram Participate In Cleanliness and Awareness Drive Port Blair, Feb 18: To create environmental awareness and to motivate and educate students about environmental protection, climate change, global warming, a cleanliness and awareness drive was conducted for the green cadets and teachers of GSS Subashgram at Ramnagar Beach, Diglipur on 16th February 2010. The theme for this years campaign is “climate change: time to act”. Ramnagar Beach is one of the famous tourist spot of North Andaman and a turtle nesting area.
The green cadets collected all sorts of wastes, which included plastic bottles, disposable plastic cups, glasses, aluminum foil wrappers etc. the cadets also collected 80 jute gunny bags full of non biodegradable wastes from the fragile turtle nesting beach.
The students also interacted with the tourists and local people present there and conveyed them their message that “if we don’t understand what is happening, no one will be here to fight for us” and also urged to “leave only footprints at the beaches”. Pamphlets were also distributed to the tourists and posters were displayed at various places.
The team was lead by Shri Bency Joy, Programme Coordinator along with teachers of the school and 70 students from different classes.
Green cadets after the cleanliness drive expressed and shared their views and pledged to leave only footprints whenever they visit sea beaches. To start with they took back all the wrappers of food which were brought at the beach for light refreshment. Earlier an opinion writing at the beach on the topic “give our beaches a chance” was organized in which Chandan Biswas and Mohitosh Ray bagged the Prizes. A sand sculpturing was also organized in which P Ganesh and team got the first position. Shri BD Sutar and his team was declared as best team of the Drive. Shri A Gopal from CPR later briefed the students about climate change
Earlier headmaster of the school Shri. Ranjit Kumar Sarkar in his address motivated the green cadets by his enlightening words and flagged off the drive.
The campaign was conducted by Eco Club of GSS Subashgram as a part of the national environment awareness campaign-2009-10 in collaboration with CPR Foundation, Chennai, approved by the ministry of environment and forest.
