After all his struggle Bishnu finally makes Mamta commit for a railway line in Andaman Port Blair, Feb. 24: After all struggles and fights in the Parliament, the lone Member of Parliament of A&N Islands was finally successful in making the Indian Railway Minister Ms. Mamta Banerjee commit for a railway line connecting Port Blair to Diglipur.
The Railway Minister Ms. Banerjee while presenting the Railway Budget 2010-11 announced today that the Railway Line Project to connect Port Blair and Diglipur is under consideration. On getting the approval from the Planning Commission, it will be implemented, she said. It was also recorded that Mamta Banerjee while making the announcement looked at the MP Shri Bishnu Pada Ray with a smile, who has been raising his voice in the Lok Sabha for the fulfillment of this demand.
The Railway Minister said, in my last budget, I had highlighted the need to take up socially desirable projects connecting backward areas. Many proposals for such connectivity have been pending for a long time. It is proposed to update the surveys for these lines and thereafter these will be processed through Planning Commission for necessary approvals.
Talking to Andaman Chronicle after today’s Parliament Session, the Member of Parliament said, “I had raised the matter in the last budget and had also met Ms. Banerjee personally. Today’s announcement is a reaction of the last sessions argument”.
“I am not only happy because a remote area like Diglipur will be connected and developed over time but am also happy that this commitment of Ms. Banerjee would generate employment opportunities for the youth of the islands”.
Ray further said, “This is just one good news for the islanders. There will be more good news for the islanders in this session”.
The connectivity of Port Blair and Diglipur through Railway Line will be recorded in the history of the islands. It is also expected that the rail line if laid away from the Andaman Trunk Road through the shore line would also help reduce the exploitation of the endangered Jarawa tribe of A&N Islands. |
