Port Blair, March 9: Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament has written to the Minister of Defence, New Delhi to consider transporting of Islands’ stretcher patients in the returning courier aircrafts of the Andaman and Nicobar Command. In a letter to the Defence Minister, Bishnu explained that currently if a resident of the island has to be transferred to the mainland by air on a stretcher, he is forced to pay approximately Rs. 90,000/- to Rs. 1,10,000/- which is the charges of Air India A-321. This puts an enormous financial and psychological burden in the patients, who would be spending large amounts on treatment in the mainland hospitals.
In this regard the joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation Shri Prashant Sukul on February 05, 2010 had communicated to the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence after a meeting with the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration and the Member of Parliament. Sukul suggested that it will be of immense public good if powers are delegated to the Commander-in-Chief for allowing patients on stretchers in the returning Defence Courier aircrafts.
The Member of Parliament therefore appealed to the Defence Minister to consider the matter in the interest of the islanders.
