Port Blair, May 8: Participating in the proceedings of Questions and answers in the Parliament on 2nd May 2012, the Member of Parliament Shri. Bishnu Pada Ray made a speech on the floor of the House regarding installation of Doppler Weather Radar in A&N Islands.

He said that A&N Islands fall under natural disaster prone area and another tsunami had hit on 11th April 2012 at Indra Point (Great Nicobar Islands). However the lives of 15 Govt. Servants were miraculously saved.

He further said that at present, no arrangement is available to predict about the natural calamities such as Earth quake, Tsunami, Cyclone, thunder storm etc. The only existing one is that of the old method of sending of Balloons two in the morning and two in the evening. But that too has been stopped since last 6 months due to the non- arrival of the instruments from France.

The A&N Administration had requested the Govt on India, Dept. Of Metrology vide their letter dt. 22/6/2010 for the installation of Doppler Weather Radar in the A&N Islands, in order to assess the Weather condition (Cyclone, thunder storm) and for the protection of Airlines flying past the islands.

The file in this regard is under red-tapism since last two years and yet the necessary site inspection/selection jointly by the representatives of the Metrological Dept. is not done with, the Member of Parliament said.

Bishnu has thus demanded for installation of Doppler Weather Radar in A&N Islands Immediately viz. one at Port Blair, one at Campbell Bay, one at Diglipur and one at Car Nicobar to save the lives of the islanders.
