Port Blair, Aug. 27: Participating in a Debate in the Lok Sabha, on 20.08.2010, the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray raised the problems relating to the Scheduled Cast people of various states of the mainland who have settled in A&N Islands.

Ray said, “In addition to the Scheduled Cast Refugees from Bangladesh; the Pallar and Paraya of Tamil Nadu, Jalairu and Mabaga of Andhra Pradesh, Balmiki from Uttar Pradesh, Kumhar from Bihar, Pulaya and Paraya from Kerala, Biswas, Mondal and Golda of East Bengal etc. who are the members of the Scheduled Casts are settled in the A&N Islands and have worked for the Development of these Islands. The people of the said Casts in these Islands are still backward, Economically, Socially, Educationally and their present population is about 60% of the total Islands population. They were relentlessly fighting since long for their recognition and declaration as Scheduled Cast, as was done in the case of the Refugees from—Bangladesh, who were brought to West Bengal and given the status of Scheduled Cast naming them as “Namsudra”.

Shri Ray therefore demanded that the people belonging to Scheduled Caste, who settled in these Islands from the States of Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, Bengal, Maharastra etc. may be given the status of Scheduled Cast in these Islands.
